Manchester United want Paul Mitchell to become their new director of football

The club are intent on providing a long-term strategy in the transfer market, which works in tandem with a new manager.Ed Woodward, the club’s executive vice-chairman, is looking at a number of candidates but the Sun claim Mitchell is his top target to fill the position.Mitchell, 37, moved to the Red Bull Arena a little over a year ago, having served a 16-month notice period following his exit from Tottenham – where he worked as head of recruitment.However, the German side are desperate to keep hold of their man and are prepared to offer Mitchell a lucrative new deal to fend off Uniteds advances.2

Mitchell has another 18 months to run on his current deal and the Manchester-born man could have a huge decision to make in the coming months should United step up their interest.In October he said he is flattered with the link: Manchester United are recognised for being one of the biggest clubs in the world.So any link with a club of that size, history and status is very flattering and I am a Manchester boy. United have been tracking Mitchell ever since former Southampton chief Nicola Cortese alerted Woodward to his excellent work at St Marys.Mitchell was responsible for the signings of Toby Alderwiereld, Sadio Mane, Nathaniel Clyne and Dejan Lovren during his time on the south coast.The new management team will have money to spend in the summer in order to bridge the gap with the Premier League’s elite in Liverpool and Manchester City.
