Everton 0-1 Leicester: Marco Silva says ‘no reason to be nervous’ despite recent poor form
Marco Silva insists there is no reason to be nervous despite Everton losing their fourth match out of the last five on New Year’s Day.Leicester edged out a poor Premier League clash in the first match of 2019, with Ricardo Pereira capitalising on a Michael Keane mistake to play in Jamie Vardy, who finished past Jordan Pickford with a powerful low strike.Everton only seriously looked like pulling level with a chance late in second half injury time which Kasper Schmeichel did well to block, and the hosts ended the match with a meagre two shots on target recorded.Vardy had the decisive impact at Goodison Park2

It is now four defeats for Everton in their previous five matches, and just one win recorded since the end of November; that 5-1 thrashing of Burnley appears a fluke, rather than the Toffees’ real level.Losing the Merseyside derby in the late, late manner they did appears to have affected Everton, and they are still fighting to recover from the huge blow dealt by Divock Origi’s winner.Silva, who is trying to deal with his first extended period of poor form since being sacked by Watford after a similar run last season, admits his side were ‘anxious’ against Leicester, with numerous players looking terrified of trying anything creative due to the risk of losing possession.“It is a disappointing result and a poor performance, since the first minute,” Silva said after the full-time whistle. “We knew before the match what they would come here to do, set up in 4-5-1 blocking space, waiting for our mistake with Vardy on the counter-attack.“We were in control in the first half and every time we tried to organise the ball we were too nervous. In some moments in the match we were too nervous, and without reason.“We had one good moment in the match with Jonjoe (Kenny) hitting the crossbar, but there was no reason to be so anxious.”Silva was sacked by Watford last season on the back of just one win in 11 matches2

Despite the recent run of results seeing Everton lose pace in the race to finish seventh, Silva insists nerves should not be an issue. He continued: “If we look to our last results, we are not consistent but it is no reason to be nervous.“Many moments in the match our fans were behind us. When you play at this level at a club like Everton, we must play to win matches and the players must handle that.“This afternoon wasn’t the best for some of them but it is my job to pass confidence on to them again.”
